Amish Friendship Bread

A sweet cinnamon bread that is made from a sourdough starter and shared among friends.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups white sugar
  • 3 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and let stand 10 minutes.
  2. In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Mix well and cover loosely.
  3. Day 1: Do nothing.
  4. Days 2-4: Stir with a wooden spoon.
  5. Day 5: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk; stir.
  6. Days 6-9: Stir with a wooden spoon.
  7. Day 10: Add 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1 cup milk. Divide into 3 containers, give 2 away, and use the remaining for bread.
  8. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Grease two loaf pans.
  9. In a bowl, mix the batter with oil, eggs, sugar, and other ingredients as per the full recipe.
  10. Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown.

Notes

This recipe requires a 10-day starter process. Ensure to use a non-metal bowl and spoon.
