Christmas Sugar Cookies

A classic holiday treat made with buttery dough, perfect for decorating with festive icing and sprinkles.

Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 tablespoons milk
  • Optional: Food coloring and sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. 1. In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, and baking powder; set aside.
  2. 2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth.
  3. 3. Beat in the egg and vanilla.
  4. 4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients, then stir in the milk.
  5. 5. Cover and chill dough for at least 1 hour.
  6. 6. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  7. 7. Roll out dough on floured surface to 1/4 inch thick.
  8. 8. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters.
  9. 9. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  10. 10. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven.
  11. 11. Cool completely before decorating.

Notes

Chill the dough to prevent spreading; use royal icing for hard decorations.
