Easy Homemade Orange Poppy Seed Cake

A moist and flavorful cake with citrusy orange zest and crunchy poppy seeds.

For the Crust:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup poppy seeds
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1 tbsp orange zest
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, poppy seeds, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, cream butter until smooth. Add eggs one at a time, then mix in orange juice, zest, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
