Fried Green Tomatoes

Crispy, tangy fried green tomatoes make a perfect Southern appetizer or side dish.

For the Crust:

  • 4 medium green tomatoes
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Slice tomatoes into 1/4-inch thick rounds. Discard the ends.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix flour, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Dip tomato slices in buttermilk, then dredge in the flour mixture. Shake off excess.
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry tomatoes in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Drain on paper towels and serve warm.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste.
