Oklahoma Onion Burgers

Traditional smashed burgers topped with caramelized onions and American cheese. A simple but iconic diner-style burger.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced.
  • 1 tablespoon canola or vegetable oil.
  • 1 pound ground beef.
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder.
  • 4 slices American cheese.
  • 4 potato buns.

Instructions

  1. Slice onions very thin.
  2. Form beef into 4 equal balls.
  3. Heat griddle/skillet over medium-high.
  4. Smash beef balls, season, top with onions.
  5. Cook 2 minutes without disturbing.
  6. Flip, scraping up crispy bits.
  7. Steam buns on top of patties.
  8. Add cheese, serve when melted.

Notes

Use very thin sliced onions.
Don’t move patties while cooking.
Steam buns on meat.
Best served immediately.
