Soft Cut-Out Sugar Cookies

Classic sugar cookies with soft centers and crisp edges, ideal for cutting into shapes and decorating. Perfect for holidays or any special occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 and 1/4 cups (281g) all-purpose flour.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • 3/4 cup (170g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature.
  • 3/4 cup (150g) granulated sugar.
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature.
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract.
  • 1/4 or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional).

Instructions

  1. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt together in medium bowl.
  2. Beat butter and sugar on high speed until smooth and creamy, about 3 minutes.
  3. Beat in egg, vanilla, and almond extract until combined, about 1 minute.
  4. Mix dry ingredients into wet ingredients on low speed. Add extra flour if dough is too sticky.
  5. Divide dough in half, roll each portion to 1/4-inch thickness between floured parchment.
  6. Stack rolled dough with parchment between layers, refrigerate 1-2 hours.
  7. Cut shapes, bake at 350°F for 11-12 minutes until lightly browned at edges.

Notes

Room temperature ingredients are essential.
Dough can be chilled up to 2 days.
Can be flavored with different extracts.
Re-roll scraps to use all dough.
