Red Velvet Thumbprints

Classic red velvet cookies with a cream cheese center, decorated with holiday sprinkles. A festive twist on traditional thumbprints.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar.
  • 1 large egg, room temperature.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • 1 teaspoon red food coloring.
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour.
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder.
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda.
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt.
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened.
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar.
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • 1/4 cup holiday sanding sugar.

Instructions

  1. Cream butter and sugar until fluffy.
  2. Mix in egg, vanilla, food coloring.
  3. Add dry ingredients gradually.
  4. Chill dough 30 minutes.
  5. Roll in sprinkles, make thumbprints.
  6. Bake at 350°F for 10-12 minutes.
  7. Mix filling ingredients.
  8. Fill cooled cookies, chill to set.

Notes

Use gel food coloring.
Chill dough before shaping.
Re-press indents after baking.
Keep refrigerated.
