Classic Southern Candied Yams Thanksgiving Side Dish

Southern Candied Yams are the perfect Thanksgiving side dish. These sweet and sticky yams are a crowd pleaser, made with sweet potatoes, warm spices, and a buttery, caramelized glaze that makes them tender and flavorful[1].

  • 2 lb. Sweet Potatoes
  • 3/4 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup White Sugar
  • 2 tsp. Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. Nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp. Ginger
  • 1/4 tsp. Salt
  • 2 tbsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 stick Butter
  • 1 Orange, juiced

Instructions

  1. Prep Sweet Potatoes:
  2. Peel and chop the sweet potatoes into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Make Sauce:
  4. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add brown sugar, white sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, salt, vanilla extract, and orange juice. Stir until well combined.
  5. Combine and Cook:
  6. Add sweet potatoes to the sauce and stir to coat thoroughly.
  7. Bake:
  8. Transfer coated yams to a baking dish. Pour remaining sauce over the top. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
  9. Baste and Continue Cooking:
  10. Remove foil, stir and baste yams with candied sauce, then bake uncovered for another 15-20 minutes until sweet potatoes are tender and glaze has thickened.
  11. Serve:
  12. Let candied yams sit to allow glaze to thicken slightly before serving.
